Jochem Claes, onze nieuwe lead Education & Research bij Microsoft nodigde ons uit voor een exposé van Kate Maxwell, een Microsoft Worldwide Education Executive.
Ik hou van dat soort sessies. De slides van MS Headquarters zijn altijd top. Ze geven je een blik op de toekomst en helpen om de eigen strategie scherp te houden. De focus van deze sessie is, hoe kan het ook anders, AI en security.
Maxwell begint met de missie van Microsoft:
“Empower every person and organisation on the planet to achieve more.” Ik hoor ze het graag zeggen. Er is nauwelijks verschil met de Serve, Empower, Care van Howest eigenlijk.
In de voorbije vier jaar werd de wereld fundamenteel door elkaar geschud door vier major shocks:
- The Global Pandemic
- The crumbling democratic values
- The Remote and Hybrid shift
- Artificial Intelligence
“The world is on the verge of big changes and it’s very difficult to predict what will happen now or next. Imagine for example a Trump 2.0 world. It is not unimaginable that tech embargo’s towards Europe and Asia will be installed. At Microsoft we’d like to stick to our values and will always operate for a global world. We are prepared for things like that.“
Heeft de gigant Microsoft effectief die integriteit? Ik hoop dat.

1. The Era of AI is here
The Implementation speed of AI is incredible. Die slide is indrukwekkend. Exponentieel is passé. Verticale penetratiecurves zijn het nieuwe normaal. Wat zo snel evolueert kan niet anders dan vroeg of laat spectaculaire resultaten opleveren.
Microsoft ziet zo’n resultaten al in specifieke domeinen. Maxwell: “Research, a domain that produces and uses enormous amounts of data moves incredibly faster than before. In fields like for example protein folding and battery technology, we see break throughs in weeks that used to take decades.”
Ook bij Microsoft is het ondertussen duidelijk welke skills en competenties nodig zijn om met AI te werken.
Het zal niet AI zijn die je job overneemt, maar wel de persoon die met AI kan werken.
En om dat te kunnen zijn basic human skills nodig: Analytisch vermogen, flexibiliteit, EQ, creativiteit, nieuwsgierigheid, …
Geen zinvol gebruik van Artificial Intelligence zonder Authentic Intelligence.
Blij dat nu ook van Microsoft te horen. AI gaat het niet van ons overnemen. De hype is over.
Maar wat een uitdaging is dat voor het onderwijs. Moeten de klassieke compentities terug domineren?
De volgende slide vind ik de max. Alles in één oogopslag. Hiermee kunnen we als instelling verder.
Onderwijskundig, organisatorisch én procesmatig moeten we dit omarmen, onze strategie aanpassen en onze roadmaps hierop afstemmen.
Accelerated learning through inclusively designed Education! Dat is toch een kolfje naar de hand van Howest?
Maar ook: Improve efficiëncy through simplified and secure IT. Dat zien we bij Howest ICT wel zitten!
We can do that!
De slides over de AI cases die getoond worden zijn me nog veel te vaag. Het is wel fijn om wat AI termino te kunnen assimileren.
Large Language Models: tools zoals Chat GPT die je bij vanalles kunnen assisteren en getraind zijn met alle info die te vinden is op het internet.
Small Language Models: tools voor je eigen organisatie die specifiek training krijgen op basis van alle info uit je eigen organisatie.
Ook fijn: Maxwell waarschuwt niet te snel te gaan met de implementatie van AI in je organisatie. Kies een aantal pilootprojecten waar de technologie al zijn deugdelijkheid bewezen heeft en waarmee je kan experimenteren om te leren.
De vraag komt in welke mate de grote aanbieders van educational applications al Microsoft AI features gebruiken. Het antwoord van Maxwell is duidelijk: “They too are moving fast. All big LMS companies are on our Azure data lakes and they have access to every AI feature we launch. So yes, AI through partners is a thing for your institutions.”

2. Microsoft is the biggest security company in the world.
“Microsoft is the biggest security company in the world.” Die cijfers zijn echt wel indrukwekkend.
Over onze security strategie moeten we niet twijfelen. Gewoon altijd de standaard features van Microsoft implementeren.
Iemand stelt de vraag we door de verstrengende regels van Europa niet terug in eigen datacenter moeten investeren.
“There will always be data that needs to be stored locally but if you give up your cloud amibitions you’ll loose the connection with the future. And trust me, with Azure you we will always be compliant with European regulation. We already invested more than 1 billion dollar, just to relocate our datacenters for European data towards European countries.“
En dan gaat het over security in onderwijs:
“Security is a fear invoking thing. And education is the most targetted sector in the world. You have very sensitive data, you have very open systems and unfortunately you have bad security. In such an environment there’s only one way to maximise your security: Simplify operations!”
Die boodschap is duidelijk. Na een cyber attack geraken leane processen makkelijkst terug on-line. Wanneer de systemen één grote koterij zijn dan lukt dat soms helemaal niet meer en loop je de kans helemaal opnieuw te moeten beginnen. The Big System Clean Up moet een focus worden in onze Roadmap Digitaal Howest.
